Tools used by Defra content designers

Guidance on the tools and platforms content designers use to support their work.

Analytics

Content designers typically assess web performance and traffic with:

  • Looker Studio
  • Google Trends
  • GOV.UK Content Data
  • Gov Search
  • GOV.UK Feedback Explorer

If you need access to any of these, post a comment on the #content slack channel.

Read about designing with data at the GOV.UK content design manual.

Content management

Content designers generally use GOV.UK Whitehall publisher to manage and update content.

Find out how to get access to Whitehall publisher.

Project management and collaboration

Jira and Confluence are used extensively at Defra for project management and collaboration. Please ask your project team for more information.

Design and prototypes

Content designers use the GOV.UK Prototype Kit, Mural and Figma to support with designing products and services.

Read more about these design tools and how we use these at Defra.

AI

Content designers review content against our standards and style with:

  • Government Communications Service (GCS) Assist
  • Content Review Assistant

Microsoft Copilot is Defra's approved generative AI tool with built-in protection for sensitive data up to OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE.

Consider whether Copilot can meet your needs before considering other tools. If you do need to use other AI tools, make sure you do not input information that could contain sensitive or personal data and always check AI-generated content for bias or inaccuracies.

Other tools

If you’re not sure whether a tool is permitted at Defra, please check with your lead content designer or by asking on the #content slack channel.
